Chapter Ten

Smoke is heavy in the air when I arrive in the hallway outside the Strategic department. If I was affected by such things, it would be making me gag and choke. However, thankfully, since I’m dream traveling, it doesn’t bother me.

There’s fire down at the end of the corridor, making the brushed stainless steel walls appear orange. I’m standing in water, which is spurting through a broken seam in the wall beside me.

Hints of chaos are everywhere as an explosion rocks the Institute. I remain steady, unaffected by the heat of the fire or thrown off-balance by whatever just attacked the walls beside me.

Thankfully that hairy gorilla at the pool seems to have followed instructions and retrieved my body and carried me to safety. I know that because I’m not dead, which is a plus. I also know now that I did only have to dream travel while submerged in water, but didn’t have to stay under the surface. Some tricky-ass voodoo that Trey had put on the Institute security protocol.

Too bad he couldn’t have also done something to keep these fuckers attacking the place out. Now it was time to find out who was doing this—since not all of this can be from one tiny Asian man with a bad temper and a vendetta. He’s got forces and I’m going to find them and take them down.

There’s screaming behind the wall of fire. That’s where the News Reporting department is. I’m not surprised that was heavily attacked. Fuckface wouldn’t have wanted them giving any hints of what was to come.

From the opposite end of the hallway, a group emerges dressed in uniforms and carrying a coward’s weapon—guns. They are parading people I recognize. Lucidites. Their hands are bound behind their backs and many have bloody cuts and bruises on their faces.

I don’t stand to the side as they march by me, unaware that I’m there and watching them. It infuriates me that I can’t do anything. I can’t even stick out my leg and trip the fuckers.

I study the soldiers, recognizing a symbol on their uniform. It’s a globe with an “M” in the middle. It stands for Mid-Group, which was a conglomeration of several corporations I’d been investigating recently. I’d been linking some of Yen Tang’s activities to them—trying to track him down. My instinct told me that he was behind some of the shady dealings going on at many of the companies. Now I see I was right and it appears he employed Mid-Group to be his military force for this mission.

Damn, I underestimated that man. I just never expected a Middling to get so powerful. So bold. And to put forces into place that could actually disarm the Lucidites.

“Put the hostages in there,” one of the Mid-Group soldiers says to the others, hitting the blue button beside a door, making it slide back.

Even more infuriating that these fuckers are making themselves at home in my sanctuary, is that they’ve taken the Lucidites hostage. However, if that’s the case, then Yen Tang didn’t just come to destroy the place or me.
